A sign?

For the 5th time, a doctor has told me losing weight on my own is next to impossible and that I should have gastric bypass. *sigh*

  1. Girl, it's totally not a sign! You can do this on your own. You don't need to have surgery. I was told by many different doctors that my only option was gastric bypass surgery and that I would never be able to lose weight on my own. 77.6 pounds later, they can all kiss my ass :) You can do this!!! If you need any support, let me know! My e-mail is lovejuliet8579@yahoo.com and I'd be happy to help in any way I can!

  2. Don't buy into what that doctor says! There are many people who have lost more than you need to by doing it the old fashioned way. GB surgery is also dangerous and I know several people who have had major problems afterwards. I've also heard nurses refer to it as "GBGB" meaning Gastric Bypass Gone Bad. I don't pass judgment on those who have had it, but there are many cases where people have not had to risk that surgery to lose. You will find your way!

  3. Maybe I'm just an optimist, but I believe that ANYONE can do it on their own if you have enough perseverence and determination. Sometimes those are hard to come by, but once you find them, hang on for dear life!

  4. Hi,

First of all, I stumbled on your blog and I'm so glad I did! You need to hear this over and over and over- YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! You are worth all of the hard work that you are going to put in to this effort and you are truly a girl worth losing! You can do this, without the help of surgery! Losing weight will help with those scary GYN problems, I've been there, I've had those smae issues and they went away....you have to give yourself a million reasons in this present moment to want to lose the weight- and then, take those reasons and apply them to your life daily and by the minute if you have to. Put a good day behind you and go for another good day!

    I'm in your corner!
    Chin up!

  5. My doctor also suggests gastric bypass. He also said that it isn't just a case of making the stomach pouch smaller, but that bypassing a section of the intestine seems to decrease certain enzymes or something (he explained it better) that keep you fat. If I could have it done without leaving the state, I would. There are no gastric bypass surgeons here. I also don't want to wait... don't want to go through the process... but may start it anyway. I want to be healthy, and this may be the way to go.

I suppose it has a lot to do with how much weight you have to lose, and whether or not you think it's reasonable that you could do it. I know at our weight it's rough, and I've also run up against a wall after losing the first 50-60 lbs (I'm fluctuating in that 10 lb range now)

You and your doctor can decide between you what's best for you. There's a lot to be said for doing it without risky surgery, but if it comes down to surgery or the weight, why would you opt to NOT do the surgery?

If you had any other illness that required surgery... cancer for instance... you wouldn't hesitate. This shouldn't be a matter of pride or stubborness. This is a HEALTH ISSUE.

  6. At my heaviest, I was 350+ (I stopped looking at the scale after that). Now I'm at 250 and every day I know I am addicted to food and have to watch it _probably just like the skinnies do. (ugh!)
Read that new book by Fulda, "Half-Assed" -- She describes the same dilemma too. She goes into detail about why or why not the surgery.
(this is not an ad for her book but a book that could help you.)
Good luck in whatever you decide.

  7. I think you should choose the surgery. It would be a lot quicker, therefore a lot more emotionally satisfying . Good Luck!! Whatever you choose!

  8. I was told by an insurance company that they wouldn't insure me because of my weight. They told me the weight they would insure me but they said I can't have had surgery or used pills to get to my weight or they would NEVER insure me. I took that as MY SIGN that weight loss surgery long term effects and risks mean that I need to do this on my own. Just some food for thought.

  9. That is just B.S. I wonder how much money he makes off referrals? I think you should prove him wrong and flaunt your weight loss in his face. You can do it however you want.

    I hate doctors !

  10. I completely agree. Ever since I gained a bunch of weight (thanks to my health) I have heard nothing but, you need to find a way to loose weight and maybe you need to consider weight loss meds and/or surgery to help. Doctors are helpful, yes, but they don't always know what is best. We are all in this together. Contact me anytime!

  11. Interesting for sure, but I do believe that you can do it on your own. I can't remember if you follow a certain 'program' such as WW or not, but maybe that is what you need (the support of people around you face to face) if you feel you're struggling, rather than surgery.

  12. Unfortunately, physicians don't know much about how to address weight problems. When it comes to dealing with obesity, they're way out of their league. My doctors have been putting me on restrictive, low-calorie diets since I was three years old, but I still grew up fat. It wasn't until I stopped listening to them that I started to learn what a healthy lifestyle (not diet) really was. I've lost almost 65 pounds so far.

Doctors aren't equipped to address emotional or compulsive eating, years (or decades) of habit formation, family history and environment, or any of the other factors that play a role in eating behavior.

  13. Don't let the doctors get you down. You CAN lose the weight on your own. They just don't want to hear it becuase it means less money in their pockets! Take it from me, it's possible!

  14. I'm with the find a new doctor crowd mostly. I actually once had a gynecologist tell me to have weight loss surgery and wanted to have another practicing physician come down to talk to me about it. Meh.

In the end I did have it, but it was definitely NOT about that situation and ultimately about me gaining control of my life. Do what's right for you and nobody else.
